Yes, you can negotiate — but only certain parts of a proper fixed-price quote. Here's what's flexible and what isn't, and the polite way to ask for a better price.

What's genuinely negotiable

  • Date flexibility. Offering a mid-week or mid-month slot instead of Friday can knock 15–20% off. See cheapest day guide.
  • Packing level. Downgrading from full-pack to part-pack or self-pack saves £150–£450.
  • Multiple services. Bundling storage or unpack with the move usually earns a 5–10% package discount.
  • Off-season timing. January, February and November are 10–20% cheaper than August.
  • Volume reduction. Aggressive decluttering can drop you into a smaller lorry.

What isn't negotiable

  • Insurance cover levels — safety-critical, never cut
  • Crew size — required for a safe day
  • Lorry type — the right size or two trips, no middle ground
  • Materials cost on packing services — fixed at wholesale

The polite negotiation script

"Your quote's £950. I've had two others at £820 and £900. You were clearly the most professional on the phone and I'd rather book you — is there any flexibility if I switch to a Wednesday and take part-pack instead of full-pack?"

This works because it: (1) names a real competing quote, (2) compliments the firm, (3) offers something back (date flexibility, service downgrade). Most coordinators can knock 5–10% off in that scenario.

What doesn't work

  • "Match this £450 quote from a random Facebook page" — the firm will politely decline and move on
  • Demanding a discount without offering flexibility in return
  • Late-in-the-day negotiation (crew already booked in)

The best negotiation happens before you're quoted

Tell the coordinator your budget upfront. Ask them to build the best package to meet it. This produces a better outcome than negotiating an existing quote downward.

Frequently asked questions

Can you negotiate removal company prices?
Yes on date flexibility, packing level, bundled services and off-season timing — typically 5–15% is achievable. No on insurance cover, crew size or lorry type — cutting these is unsafe. Always offer something back (mid-week slot, self-pack) rather than just asking for a discount.
Will a removal company match a cheaper quote?
Sometimes — especially if the competing quote is from a similarly reputable firm and you can name it. Most coordinators can match within 5–10% by moving you to a cheaper slot or downgrading the packing service. A quote from an unknown Facebook trader is rarely matched.
Is it rude to negotiate with a removal company?
Not at all — it's normal in the industry. Coordinators expect it. The polite approach is to compliment their professionalism, name a competing quote honestly, and offer something back (date flexibility, service downgrade) rather than demanding a straight discount.
