COST GUIDES6 MIN READ

A £600 quote that becomes an £850 invoice usually isn't fraud — it's ambiguous small print. Every one of these nine hidden costs can be forced out into the open before you book.

1. Fuel and mileage surcharges

Some firms quote a "base" figure and add fuel per mile. Always ask for the all-in figure including fuel. Apex fixed prices always include diesel.

2. Congestion Zone and ULEZ

Central London moves often incur a £15 Congestion Charge, a £12.50 ULEZ, or both. Ask which are included.

3. Parking permits and suspensions

Bay suspensions in most UK cities cost £30–£130. Some firms include the admin; others charge £75 as an extra.

4. Long-carry charges

If the lorry can't park within 20m of the door, some firms bill a "long carry" fee of £80–£150. Confirm the free-carry distance upfront.

5. Stair charges

A few firms charge per flight above the ground floor. Ask whether stairs are included — a fully-inclusive firm never mentions the word.

6. Dismantling / reassembly

Beds, wardrobes, garden furniture. Some firms bill £30 per item. Apex includes dismantling of standard flat-pack furniture at no extra charge.

7. Packing materials

Wardrobe cartons at £8 each, mattress covers at £6, dish barrels at £12. On a 3-bed move, this can add £120 quietly. Ask what's included in the price.

8. Storage overnights

If completion slips and the lorry has to stay loaded overnight, some firms bill £250–£400. Written policies protect you.

9. VAT

Rare but it happens. Confirm every quote is VAT-inclusive.

How to force a fully-inclusive quote

Ask one question: "Is this the total number I'll pay on move day, or are there any circumstances in which the invoice will be higher?" Get the answer in writing. Any hesitation means walk away. See our 15 questions guide.

Frequently asked questions

What hidden fees do removal companies add?
The most common are fuel surcharges, Congestion Zone / ULEZ crossings, parking suspensions, long-carry fees, stair charges, dismantling fees, packing materials and overnight storage if completion slips. Ask for a fully-inclusive fixed written quote to eliminate every one.
Should VAT be included in a removal quote?
Yes — every quote should explicitly state whether it is VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive. VAT-registered firms in the UK add 20%, so a £600 exclusive quote becomes £720 including VAT. Always confirm before booking.
How do I avoid surprise removal charges?
Insist on a fixed written quote covering fuel, congestion, parking, dismantling, packing materials, stairs and overnight storage. Get one line that says "total payable", and confirm no other charges apply regardless of how the day unfolds.
