MOVING TIPS6 MIN READ

Move-day stress is almost always cumulative panic from six weeks of postponement. Spread the work evenly and moving becomes an ordinary busy week, not a crisis.

Week 6 — the calm start

  • Book removals (see timing guide)
  • Order a Royal Mail redirect
  • Start a shared moving folder
  • Declutter one room per week — begin with the loft

Week 5

  • Notify schools, GP, dentist
  • Book childcare / pet care for move day itself
  • Order any new furniture that needs long lead times
  • Continue declutter (spare bedroom / garage)

Week 4

  • Confirm packing service level with your coordinator
  • Contact utility providers (energy, water, broadband, council tax)
  • Update car documents (V5C, driving licence)
  • Continue declutter (kitchen non-daily items)

Week 3

  • Start packing loft & garage — you're not touching them again
  • Label every box on two sides plus the top by destination room
  • Book a professional cleaner for the property you're leaving
  • Confirm bay suspensions if you're in a permit area

Week 2

  • Pack non-daily rooms (formal dining, spare bedroom, hobbies)
  • Empty and defrost freezer 48 hours before use is stopped
  • Confirm date and address in writing with removals coordinator
  • Batch-cook and freeze meals for the first week in new home

Week 1

  • Pack everything except a "week ahead" essentials pile
  • Photograph the back of every TV / monitor
  • Confirm childcare and pet care
  • Assemble one "day-one" essentials box per person

The day before

  • Full-pack crew arrives if booked
  • Strip beds, take down curtains
  • Empty fridge to cool bag
  • Set out tea, biscuits, kettle for the morning crew

Move day itself

Meet the crew, brew the tea, direct box placement, walk through both properties before crew leaves. That's your entire job for the day.

The rule that fixes everything

Don't leave anything for the final week that could be done in an earlier one. The final week fills itself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I plan a stress-free house move?
Spread the work over 6 weeks instead of cramming into the final one. Book removals 4–6 weeks ahead, declutter one room per week, start packing loft and garage at week 3, and leave only bathroom essentials for the final 24 hours. The final week fills itself.
How early should I start planning a house move?
Six weeks ahead of your target completion date. Any earlier and you'll pack things you still need; any later and you're cramming and stressed. A structured 6-week rhythm is the single biggest predictor of a calm move day.
What's the number one thing that reduces moving stress?
Booking childcare and pet care for move day itself, then leaving the crew to do their job. Trying to help the crew doesn't speed things up — they're a trained team. Direct box placement, brew tea, and let them work.
