Moving House Checklist: The Complete 8-Week UK Plan

Moving house is consistently ranked as one of the three most stressful life events, just behind bereavement and divorce. It doesn't have to be. Almost every horror story we hear at Apex, and we've heard thousands, comes down to one root cause: the family started packing too late. This checklist is the plan we hand to our own coordinators. Follow it and move day becomes the easy bit.

Eight weeks before completion

The moment your solicitor is instructed, the clock starts. You have roughly eight working weeks to strip a house down to a lorry-load and rebuild it in a new postcode.

• Book a reputable removals company. Good crews in South East England are booked 3–6 weeks out for Fridays and end-of-month dates. Get three fixed written quotes — never accept an "hourly" figure that can spiral on the day.
• Start a moving folder (paper or digital). Solicitor letters, mortgage offer, EPC, buildings insurance, removals quote, inventory. Everything lives in one place.
• Declutter room by room. The average British three-bed home contains about £3,000 of items that would not be missed. Selling on Vinted, Facebook Marketplace, or Ziffit funds the move.

Six weeks before

• Notify schools, GP, dentist, and any regular healthcare providers.
• Contact your utility suppliers — energy, water, broadband, council tax — and ask for the switch-over process.
• Order a redirection from Royal Mail (currently £39.99 for 3 months, £75.99 for 12 — cheapest single move-day insurance you'll ever buy).
• Confirm the packing service level with your removals company. Full-pack, part-pack (kitchens and fragiles only), or fragile-only.

Four weeks before

• Update your address on the DVLA driving licence and V5C vehicle log book. Legally required within a reasonable time and free online.
• Notify your bank, credit-card providers, pension provider, insurance policies, subscriptions (Netflix, Amazon, gym).
• Book a professional deep-clean or carpet clean for the property you're leaving. Most tenancies and many private sale contracts now expect it.

Two weeks before

• Begin packing everything you won't need in the next 14 days. Books, out-of-season clothes, spare bedding, ornaments.
• Label boxes on two sides plus the top, using the destination room, not the source room. Your removals crew will place boxes correctly on the day.
• Photograph the back of every TV, monitor, and console — the cabling is your future self's biggest headache.
• Empty the loft. Nobody moves loft contents in one afternoon.

One week before

• Confirm the moving date and address in writing with your removals coordinator.
• Run down the freezer. Anything left after move day travels in a cool bag, not the lorry.
• Pack a "day one" box per person: kettle, mugs, teabags, phone charger, toilet roll, PJs, meds, a change of clothes.
• Arrange childcare and pet care for move day itself. Genuinely the single biggest gift you can give yourself.

Move day

1. Crew arrives 07:30–08:30. Show them round every room including loft, shed, and garage.
2. Keep kettle, milk, mugs, biscuits on the side. British removals runs on tea.
3. Walk the empty house before locking up: check every cupboard, the shed, the garage roof space.
4. Take final meter readings and photograph them.
5. Hand keys to the estate agent, not the buyer — chain of custody matters if anything is disputed.

First 48 hours in the new home

• Locate the stopcock, consumer unit, gas meter, and thermostat before you unpack a single mug.
• Test smoke alarms and CO alarms. Replace batteries as a matter of routine.
• Unpack kitchen, bathroom, and beds first. Everything else can wait a week.
• Submit meter readings to your new utility supplier the same day you move in.
